There is no railway station at Udawalawe, but that does not mean you have to skip the train entirely.
From the hill country
Many travellers ride the scenic train to Ella, then continue south by road. The drive down from the hills to the plains is beautiful, and the change in landscape is dramatic.
From the south coast
From beach towns on the south coast, Udawalawe is a comfortable road trip, which makes it an easy day trip or overnight stop.
Bus or private driver?
Public buses are cheap and an experience in themselves, but they can be crowded and involve changes. A private driver costs more but saves time and lets you stop along the way.
Our tip
Combine a safari with your journey: arrive in the afternoon, sleep near the park and do the morning drive before moving on.
