Birding in Udawalawe: A Guide for Beginners

Raptors, waterbirds and the endemic Sri Lanka junglefowl. Where and when to look for the park's rich birdlife.

Contents

Udawalawe is famous for elephants, but birders know it as one of the most rewarding parks in the south. Open grassland, scrub and the reservoir create habitats for a wide variety of species.

Where to look

  • The reservoir edge for storks, herons, egrets and cormorants
  • Dead trees in the grassland for eagles and other raptors
  • Scrub and forest edges for smaller birds and the Sri Lanka junglefowl

When to go

Early morning is best, when birds are most active. Migrant species add variety in the cooler months.

Gear and tips

Bring binoculars and a simple field guide or app. Ask your driver if they know birds. Some are excellent spotters and will happily stop for a closer look.
